The Golden Child Has a Hard Time Too
Many families have one: the kid who does everything right. They make good grades, stay out of trouble, and help keep the peace when tension rises. Because they never cause problems, they often become the favorite, the one parents point to with pride and rarely worry about. But for a lot of these kids, being "good" isn't simply their personality. It's how they get through a home that doesn't feel steady.
Always On
Being the golden child means never really getting to clock out. It's stressful, and it's a weight no kid should have to carry. Still, they believe it's their job, because if they slip, everything might fall apart or get even more chaotic than it already is.
That often means they don't feel free to show their emotions, get upset, or simply have a bad day. There's always something else going on and always some friction in the house, so they push their own feelings aside and hold things together.
What It Does to the Family
This role can put quiet strain on everyone. When a sibling acts out or does whatever they want, tension and resentment can build between them. The whole household may end up walking on eggshells, and the golden child spends their energy making sure nothing on their end adds to the fights or the dysfunction that's already there.
When the Pressure Catches Up
Holding everything together can work for a while, but it rarely lasts forever. Often as they get older, the golden child starts to struggle, and it can feel like failing at life. They wonder what happened, because they used to have it all together.
What they may not realize is that having it all together was how they survived. They never had room to mess up or fall, because they didn't want to disturb the peace or let go of the image everyone had of them. Parents can be confused and think something has suddenly gone wrong, when really this may be the first time their kid has had space to struggle at all.
A Lot Like Being the Strong One
If you read When You're Tired of Being the Strong One, some of this may sound familiar. The golden child carries a similar weight, with the pressure to keep everything okay and the fear that things will crumble if they don't. Many become the family mediator, and that role can slowly become their whole identity.
That makes it hard to figure out who you are. When you're focused on never doing anything wrong, and you're praised for it, you miss out on the messy, ordinary experiences that help people learn and grow. Mistakes are part of how we find out what we want and what we can handle.
You Deserve to Just Be
If this was you, you deserve a place where you can finally let your mask down. You don't have to be perfect, and there's nothing wrong with you. Keeping the peace was never supposed to be a kid's job. If it felt like you were the only thing holding your family together, that house wasn't going to be peaceful no matter how hard you tried. You were putting a bandaid on something much bigger, when what you deserved was the chance to just be.
Messing up is part of life, and it's okay to fall and get back up. Anyone who expects you to be perfect is holding you to a standard no one can meet, and even if you met it for a while, nobody can keep that up forever. I hope you find a space where you can rest and be yourself.
